Captured Moments

  • Chesterton Art Center 115 S. Fourth Street Chesterton, IN United States (map)

During the month of July, the Chesterton Art Center will be featuring the work of Debra Simanski, Sharon Goodall, and Susan Brandstetter in an exhibit titled, "Captured Moments". The exhibit will begin July 1 and hang through the end of the month. Guests are invited to meet the artists at the Opening Reception on Saturday, July 13 from 1-4 pm.

Debra Simanski is a lifetime artist working out of her studio on Porter Beach. She is third generation here on the shores of Lake Michigan. Her grandparents, George S. Smith (a Chicago architect famous for his Catholic Church designs) and Nell Mamroth Smith (known for her lavish Dune Acres parties), were two early residents of Dune Acres beginning in 1946. Prior to that, the family rented a cottage called, "Ragged Robin" on Porter beach every summer since 1935. Debra is the daughter of the late Dune Acres artist and resident, George S. Smith Jr. Being a third generation Indiana Dunes lover, she has spent her summers in the Dunes since 1952 and is now joyfully a full-time resident.

Prior to retirement, Debra had her own graphic arts business in Plymouth, IN. For over 40 years, she owned and operated her business designing logos, newspaper/magazine ads, display materials, catalogs, and promotional campaigns for small businesses, corporations, and political campaigns. As a young girl, Debra attended art lessons at the Gardner Art School on the south side of Chicago, learning many types of mediums or art. Although she favors painting with oils, this exhibit is featuring Debra's love for the Dunes with many acrylic paintings done over the last 5 years.

The "Captured Moments" exhibit will open on July 1 and be on display through July 31 at the Chesterton Art Center, with the Opening Reception taking place on Saturday, July 13 from 1-4.
