Botanical Photographs by Jim Shirey

  • Marshall J. Gardner Center for the Arts 540 S. Lake Street Gary, IN United States (map)

Jim Shirey will be exhibiting his unique and intricate photographs at the Marshall J. Gardner Center for the Arts - 540 S. Lake Street, Gary, IN - from April 13 – 28. An Opening Reception will be held on Saturday April 13th from 6-9pm. Gallery hours are Thursday and Friday afternoons 12-6pm, Fridays and Saturday evenings 6-9pm, and Sundays 1-4pm.

Patrons will be delighted by photographs of flowers such as:
Deptford Pink; Dianthus Armeria
This small blossom would fit easily into a finger-nail, and the two pistils are barely visible to the naked eye. Taken at about 3X optical magnification. The lighting effects are an artifact of changing light and the stacking algorithm.

Jim grew up near Gary IN and worked in the steel mills in the early 60s. After receiving a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Purdue University, he moved with his wife Sandy and family to Athens, OH where he taught as a professor of Mathematics until his retirement. His career as a photographer began shortly thereafter. Jim and Sandy live adjacent to a wildlife area from where Jim draws inspiration.
