South Shore Arts has provided art instruction since 1970. We offer classes from painting to ceramics to comics. There is something for everyone. South Shore Arts instructors are highly qualified teaching artists. Many of our instructors are professional artists working in the field. They bring they knowledge and talents to create a vibrant learning experience like no other. 

We have locations in Munster, Crown Point & Hammond.

Ceramics (Pottery)

South Shore Arts offers ceramics classes for students of all ages at the Center for Visual & Performing Arts in Munster. The ceramics facility is located within the Oesterle Studio. The South Shore Arts ceramics studio is a dedicated low-fire facility and features:

  • 1 - Skutt 1027 kiln

  • 2 - Brent SRC slab rollers

  • 8 - Brent Model C potter’s wheels

  • 2 - Clay Extruders

The children’s and youth programs focus on introducing young people to the materials and teaching basic hand-building and glazing techniques. As young students progress in their study, they are encouraged to try throwing vessels on the wheel.

Students enrolled in our adult and senior classes are provided foundational instruction in hand-building, wheeling throwing and glazing. As they build skill with the material they are encouraged to engage in a practice of self-directed inquiry. All students in our adult classes are permitted to use the ceramics facility outside of class during open lab hours.

Art Foundations

Art Foundations is the perfect class to satisfy young creative curiosity. Students enrolled in this class will have the opportunity to explore a variety of art mediums including painting, drawing and mixed media. All supplies are included. Students should dress for mess!

Drawing

South Shore Arts offers drawing classes for students of all ages.

Intro to Drawing classes begin by building a foundation based on a practice of observational drawing. Intro to Drawing is the perfect class for the introductory student. No previous drawing experience is required. Students will learn the fundamentals of drawing including line, shape and perspective. Materials used in this class include pencil/graphite, charcoal, pastels and Conté crayons.

For the more advanced student we offer drawing studio and figure drawing classes where students are encouraged to pursue more self-directed study and instructors work with students to help them develop their unique creative voice.

Painting

South Shore Arts offers watercolor classes for adult students and intro to painting classes for young people. We will begin offering an acrylic painting class during the 2019 fall class session.

Watercolor Painting is perfect for both the artist who has never picked up a brush or already dabbles. In this popular class, students will explore a wide range of watercolor possibilities, including traditional approaches and unusual techniques. Design and color will be emphasized for watercolorists at all levels of skill. Basic drawing skills are needed for this class.

Children’s Intro to Drawing & Painting is a great introduction to the basics of drawing and painting. Weekly projects will focus using a variety of media, such as tempera, watercolor and pencil/graphite. All supplies are included.

Manga & Comics

Manga is the popular Japanese style of comics. Students enrolled in our Manga class create original stories, character designs and learn how to lay out manga pages. Each Manga class culminates with students creating a collected publication featuring examples of work created by all students during the class session. All supplies are included.

Photography & Digital Media

South Shore Arts is one of the few remaining places in the area that provides beginning and experienced photographers with access to a black & white darkroom studio. The Bodie Photography Studio at the Center for Visual & Performing Arts in Munster features a darkroom with six photo enlargers.

In addition to classes in traditional darkroom photography, we also offer classes in Photoshop (fall only), Digital Photography (winter only) and workshops in special topics, such as pinhole photography.

Airbrushing Studio

South Shore Arts offers airbrushing at our Substation No. 9 branch in Hammond. The airbrush studio features 5 stations. By keeping classes sizes small, the instructor is able to spend more time with each student.

Airbrushing Studio is perfect for both beginning and experienced students. Students will learn how to use and maintain airbrush equipment. As students become more familiar with the tool, the instructor will cover advancing penciling and stenciling techniques. All supplies are included. Class is limited to 5 students.

Senior Art Workshop

Oil, Pastel, Prisma Color, Watercolor, Pen & Ink—be creative in any of the media listed above. Acrylic Painting is available in Crown Point. Be creative in any of the media mentioned above. Beginning students will learn the basic techniques using their preferred materials. Intermediate and advanced students will learn how to analyze subjects, work from the imagination or photographs, and create finished works of art. Supplies are not included.

Workshops & Camps

South Shore Arts offers workshops in a variety of media. Workshops serve two purposes. One, they are perfect for students who want to take a class but whose schedules might not be able to accommodate a nine-week commitment. Two, we are sometimes able to offer exciting arts experiences with guest instructors or disciplines in which we do not generally offer classes. Workshops scheduled for the upcoming session are:

  • Hat Making 101 - November 3, 2019 (Munster)

Camps are week-long experiences for young people. Camps are themed-based and offer young people the opportunity to engage in creative activities during times when schools are out on break.

  • We recommend you sign up at least a week before the class start date.

  • Become a member and save 10% on most classes.

  • Give the gift of an Art Class—Gift certificates can be used toward art classes or in the Gift Shop. Call 219-836-1839 for details.

REFUND POLICY

If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, a full refund will be granted. Refunds, minus a 10% processing fee, for class withdrawal will be allowed only if notification is made before the second class meeting. No refunds will be made for withdrawal after the second class meeting. No refunds will be made on Memberships.

Registrants—please attend your class unless South Shore Arts contacts you to cancel it. We will only contact you if it is canceled.
Class fees cannot be pro-rated.

Are you an individual, organzation or business looking for a creative way to give back? Sponsor a scholarship! It can be for an individual student or an entire scholarship fund. This is a great idea for a charitable donation or for planning giving.

APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP

South Shore Arts offers a limited number of need-based scholarships for elementary through high school students who have been recommended by a classroom teacher or art instructor. Documentation of financial need is required.
