Hamlet

  • Gary Public Library 220 West 5th Avenue Gary, IN, 46402 United States (map)

Gary Shakespeare Company announces the opening of Hamlet by William Shakespeare directed by company co-founder Mark Baer. The show will perform FREE-OF-CHARGE 14 times in 9 different public spaces across Northwest Indiana, July 21st through September 16th.

Arguably Shakespeare’s greatest work, Hamlet dramatizes the struggle of an isolated college student caught between his loyalty to his deceased father and his religious and moral responsibilities. Feeling trapped and betrayed, Hamlet spirals downward, unable to find support from his mother or friends, until he perishes leaving a trail of destruction in his wake. “We feel this story will resonate with many people as if it were written today,” says Baer. “Our actors are finding that it hits very close to home, despite having been written 400 years ago.”

Hamlet will open with a Gala performance ay the newly renovated Gary Public Library and Cultural Center (220 W. 5th Avenue) on July 21. The Gala, which helps raise funds to offset the cost of production, is the only ticketed performance of the summer. The Gala reception will begin at 6pm with the performance at 7pm. $20 tickets must be purchased in advance via the www.garyshakesco.org/gala-tickets
