Area Students Receive Recognition for Outstanding Artistic Talent

Three Porter County high school students were recognized at a presentation of the Regional Youth Arts Award in September. As part of NIAA’s partnership with the Indiana Arts Commission, the Regional Arts Council for Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties has selected outstanding students to be recognized for their talent and dedication to their art for the past three years. A faculty member from school must first nominate the student. At that point, a committee comprised of Regional Arts Council members holds auditions to choose the finalists and winner.

NIAA is pleased to announce that Alexandra Michelle Stewart, an honor student from Portage High School, is this year’s Regional Youth Arts Award winner. Ali performs in all aspects of theatre, including acting, dance and stage direction; but it is in vocal performance where she truly excels.

"Ali works and performs with enthusiasm, imagination and verve. She has a real vision and drive for excellence that is never compromised, never diminished," her teacher stated in the nomination. Ali’s future plans include continuing her education in music with aspirations of performing opera professionally.

This year’s Regional Youth Arts Award finalists were Courtney Wright, who plays the viola, and Alexandra Andrejevich, who plays horn. Both students are from Valparaiso High School. All of the nominees were extremely talented and well deserving of recognition.
