| WINTER 2006 Regional Arts Providers Awarded Grants South Shore Arts in its role as Regional Partner of the Indiana Arts Commission for Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties has awarded grants totaling $125,627 to 25 organizations for operations and programs in fiscal year 2006. NIAA received requests totaling over $805,00. Grants were reviewed in public session in April, where each grantee’s funding eligibility was determined by quality of programming, quality of governance and community impact. By the time IAC’s state allocation was adjusted down by 7% from the amount approved by the Indiana General Assembly last May, most grantees received only 25% of their funding approved by the panelists and NIAA board. This will require them to seek additional funding from other sources. ![]() NIAA Special Projects Director Jennifer Vinovich congratulates the Gary Art Works team: Executive Director Rudy Williams, Board Member Joyce Davis, Board President Irene Smith King, Development Director Cara Spicer. Mrs. King serves as Northwest Indiana's representative to the Indiana Arts Commission. This is the eighth year in which NIAA has managed the regional granting program for the Indiana Arts Commission. Prior to the Regional Partnership, only nine IAC grants were awarded in Lake and Porter Counties. “The ever-increasing number of Region 1 grant applicants demonstrates the effectiveness of the IAC’s decentralization process. On the other hand, its success has created a far greater demand for state funding than either the IAC or NIAA can provide,” said NIAA Special Projects Director Jennifer Vinovich. As an IAC Regional Arts Partner, NIAA offers arts organizations, arts providers and individual artists grant writing workshops, as well as technical assistance workshops. NIAA also provides a regional calendar housed on the website (niaaonline.org) for organizations to publicize their events. “Arts organizations and providers in Northwest Indiana are becoming better aware of the assistance available to them through NIAA, and that’s a victory for everyone involved in the arts,” stated Vinovich. The next round of grants will begin with grant workshops in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties in November and December. The deadline for FY07 grants is March 1, 2006.
