Explore how art can tell stories. Look into the past and see how prior societies used art, rather than books, to tell the stories of their lives. This camp will start at the beginning and discuss cave paintings. After discussing their meaning, you will create your own cave paintings. Then we will jump forward and talk about how Native Americans, the first residents of this country, passed along their tales. At the end we will discuss how art has become a modern way to tell stories in the art of graffiti. For each society that is discussed, we will explore and then use them as inspiration to create your own work of art, telling a story the way these societies did. All supplies are included. African Mask-Making Two-Day Workshop
ages 10 – 13
Come share the mystery, drama and magic of masks in this two-day workshop. Students will create two different masks: the Dogon animal mask from Mali and the Songye mask from Zaire. They will be able to wear them home at the end of the second class. Paint will be used so dress appropriately or wear a smock. All supplies are included. Class is limited to 12 students. No discounts are applicable for this workshop.

Bookbinding Workshop
ages 15 and up
This workshop will take you on a journey to Medieval Italy... a time when artisan Monks handcrafted books that would last a thousand years. Each student will create their own 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" hard bound book or journal using Medieval bookbinding methods. Learn how to stitch and glue the paper signatures into a book block. Clovers will be created using reclaimed materials from old leather purses and luxurious wallpaper samples. Students will be able to use these techniques to create their own books at home. Instruction will also be provided on other binding methods, the History of Books, Paper making, and other Book Arts of the period. You will even hear a few intriguing travel stories from Italy! Class is limited to 8 students. Please request a supply list when registering for this workshop. No discounts are applicable for this workshop.
