DRAWING

Intro to Beginning Drawing
This is an abbreviated session to introductory concepts which are taught in the beginning class. This class dispels the myth of talent as a requirement for successful drawing. Everything you need to be a competent artist is as learnable as in any other vocation. You will learn logical and practical strategies enabling you to solve any drawing problem you may encounter, simply by showing you how. Because you will learn these skills by doing, they will be life skills that you will never forget. Those taking this class should expect to surpass their expectations. Media includes pencil, charcoal, pastels and conté crayon. A drawing board for permanent home use is provided. All supplies are included.

Intro to Cartooning
ages 9 – adult

This class is for beginners wanting to explore the methods and problems of drawing particular to cartooning. The student will be shown how to take real life subjects and transform them into cartoon figures, from objects to animals to people. Major concentration will focus on various methods of character development including the “Disney Method.” Continuity is very important in this class; best results come from faithful attendance. Principles of caricature will be addressed based on available time and student readiness. All supplies are included.

Open Painting Studio
Students, both beginning and advanced, can work in one of the following mediums: acrylic, oil, watercolor or pastel. Bring in a photo to draw from or a still life can be set up. Beginning Painting for Adults
This class is designed to build on drawing skills and expose adults to a variety of materials and painting techniques. Instructions and projects will be presented using various painting materials such as ink, watercolor, acrylic and oil. This class is an opportunity for students to try a variety of painting media without taking a full-length painting class or purchasing a set of personal supplies. All supplies are included.

POTTERY

Adult Pottery
This popular class is limited to 8 students. With four wheels, half the class will hand-build while half use the wheel. Sharing of equipment is necessary but students are allowed to use unsupervised lab time to be scheduled through the office during the entire class session. Students will be introduced to creating three-dimensional form through hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. Basic methods of creating utilitarian vessel forms will be covered, along with decorative techniques and simple glazing. No experience with clay is needed. Experienced students will work on projects of their choice. Course fee includes unlimited use of glazes and regular kiln firings for all pieces created in the class. A 25 lb. supply of clay is included in the class fee. Additional clay may be purchased at class.

Senior Art Workshop
ages 55 and older

Oil, Pastel, Prisma Color, Acrylic, Watercolor, Pen & Ink—be creative in any of the media mentioned above. As a beginner students will learn the basic technique of painting and how to use color to create a beautiful piece of art. Intermediate and advanced students will learn how to analyze subjects, work from the imagination and enhance their paintings. Supplies will be discussed on the first day of class.

Drawing and Painting Portraits
This eight week class is designed to teach beginning and advanced students a common sense and structured approach to drawing and painting the portrait. Students will learn how to develop a discerning eye to capture the likeness of their sitter by way of careful analysis of the line, shape, value and color relationships in a face. It is highly recommended that those interested in pastel or oil execute at least one drawing in pencil or charcoal (during class) before moving on. There will be a model for six of the classes. Learn the mechanics, maintenance, and use of an airbrush. This class will teach you the basics of airbrush art. Introduction to Digital Camera Techniques
This course is designed for owners of digital cameras who feel they need to understand their cameras better and for students who have not yet purchased digital cameras and are curious about what features to buy. Topics will include resolution, white balance, exposure controls and proper exposure, histograms, automatic features, picture composition, and topics that students themselves want to bring to the class. Students may also bring in examples of problem images for troubleshooting. This is a six week class.

35mm Photography Techniques
This class will focus on your camera and how it works. The camera body, correct film for the occasion, viewing and focusing the subject, quality of light, depth of field, types of shutters, controlling exposure, and problem exposure conditions are among the topics to be discussed. Students will supply their own camera, film and processing for about four rolls of film.

This course is for the participant who is experienced with manual 35mm camera and already knows darkroom basics. The focuses will be on the use of darkroom equipment, correct mix of chemicals, exposure of photograph to develop and print their images, solarization, coloring. Additional technical knowledge will be offered and special interests will be addressed. Participants are responsible for film and paper. All dark room materials and chemicals will be provided. B/W Photography with Dark Room (All Levels)
This class is for beginning or intermediate level students. Beginners will learn about film, 35mm camera controls, proper exposure of film and prints, film developing, film and darkroom chemistry, and the beginnings of making a fine black and white print. For intermediate students already familiar with black and white film, using the camera and have used the darkroom, this is a chance to become re-involved. They will be given instruction and feedback for improving their images in the future. For those that need challenges, be prepared to show previous work and receive feedback and suggestions. Whichever category you fall in, you will get enjoyment and knowledge out of this course. Participants will be responsible for film and paper. Batik Workshop
ages 18 and up

Participants will learn the ancient art of Batik. Batik is a textile art similar to tie-dying. Instead of tying the fabric, wax is applied to resist dyes. The wax can be removed and re-applied several times to make beautiful and intricate designs. Each artist will be able to finish at least 2 products in this two day workshop. The first session will include instruction, planning the design, applying wax to the fabric, and dyeing the fabric. The second session will entail more of the same and each person should leave with two batiked fabric pieces. No discounts are applicable for this workshop.

Painted Wineglass Workshop

Paint and design your own wineglasses in this fun workshop. Registrants will need to bring in six (plain glass) wineglasses (dollar stores have them). All other supplies are provided. The instructor will have patterns for use. Paint them here and take them home and bake in your oven. There will be a break for lunch. You may bring a brown bag lunch or go to a local restaurant. Art in Focus founded by Rita M. Ray
This FREE program is designed for adults of all ages, who want to continue to grow and use our many resources to better understand and appreciate the history of art and its impact on our world. In addition to the traditional video presentations and discussions that have been a staple of Art in Focus from the beginning, this year's program will also feature special guest artists, including Sculptors Neil Goodman, Terry Karpowicz and Mike Helbing, whose work can be found in many settings of public art, as well as a field trip to the Brauer Museum of Art at Valparaiso University. This year's program pertains to "The Landscape in Art and Art in the Landscape". No pre-registration is required.
